Bio

Alberto Pinto pursued his studies in Mathematics and Physics at the Università degli Studi di Milano, where he earned a PhD in Computer Science with a focus on digital signal processing, perceptual audio coding, and music information retrieval.

He also graduated in Organ and Organ Composition at the “G. Verdi” Conservatory of Music in Milan, and received the Diplôme de Concert avec Mention in Organ and Improvisation from the Haute école de Musique de Genève, studying with Alessio Corti.

His academic career includes research positions in musical informatics and acoustics at the University of Milan and Utrecht University (Netherlands). Since 2006, he has been a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Stanford University (USA).

Since 2008, he has taught university courses in Mathematics, Signal Processing, and Computer Science in Italy and Switzerland. In 2012, he became Director of CESMA – Centro Europeo per gli Studi in Musica e Acustica in Lugano, Switzerland.

His research lies at the intersection of applied mathematics, computer science, and music, with a particular focus on mathematical musicology and music information retrieval. He has authored more than thirty publications, including books, journal articles, and conference papers, and regularly serves as referee and scientific committee member for international journals and conferences in musical informatics, sound and music computing, and machine learning.

In 2018, he received the AES Board of Governors Award. Since 2019, he has served as Vice President of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) for the SEMEA region and as a member of the AES Swiss Section Education Committee. He is also active in the IEEE Standards Association — co-authoring the international standard IEEE 1599-2008 within the Technical Committee on Computer Generated Music — as well as in the ACM and the IMS.

He has been honored with several awards, including the Gold Medal for Mathematics (Silver Plate of the President of the Italian Republic), the Ivano Becchi Prize (BML Foundation), and a nomination for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award (Stanford University, Politecnico di Milano, University of Milan). His musical achievements include prizes at the National Organ Competition of Viterbo (CariVit Prize) and the Pierre Segond Award (City of Geneva). He frequently appears as a speaker at international conferences, workshops, and seminars.
